country chic

(jen aniston, kate bosworth, ashley olsen)

lately we have been seeing a swarm of celebrities and stores showcasing the notoriously known farmer shirts--flannel plaid button downs. what was once determined unfashionable and homely, plaid shirts are invading the magazines and the fashionistas' closets. i know when i was younger, i always enjoyed wearing my flannel shirts because they were the most comfortable piece of clothing i could wear outside my house. however, flannel plaid shirts were never used to define the curves of your body or demonstrate one's exceptional style. now whenever i walk into a trendy store or flip the pages of an US Weekly, i see many different versions of the article of clothing. i think it is very interesting to see how celebrities and media can manipulate girls' opinion on style. before this new trendy wave, girls would not be caught dead in a flannel shirt so it is remarkable how quickly we change our minds about what is 'okay' to wear around.

obviously, i am a fan of this new trend, but what does it really say about our individuality. i'm not going to stop following trend reports, but i just want to draw it to your attention. i think it is really important to stay true to one's unique style and mix+match trends with your own originality. gotta keep them guessin'!

  1. I think this is really funny as a trend, too. I personally also loved flannel growing up. I think I find it funny that it's a fashion statement now because usually the style is so stereotypically "farmer" or "southern" or "woodsmen." I grew up in the midwest surronded by farms and living on an orchard. Flannel was a common item of clothing, but never struck me as a fashion statement. It's comfortable and durable. When I was in Asheville, NC this break I noticed that at this BBQ restaraunt we were pretty much they only ones without flannel on. But, no one seemed to be wearing the style as a fashion statement. It just seemed normal. It's strange to see it on celebs and people as a statement on people in big cities and such. I can't imagine what kind of "statement" they're trying to make with this style. It's nothing new, and it's not original and individualistic. I am happy it has gotten big though, because now there's much more flannel avaible.

  2. I love country chic. Definitely a cute look that can be simplistically sexy and hip. I'm glad its coming back in style and Im glad that there are people who rock the country look no matter what. I think that with such a big Country music following the country look may never fully go out of style.

  3. This is interesting because just over Easter I was rummaging through my dads old flannel shirts and managed to steal a few good ones. I know for a fact that I would NEVER have brought into this trend a year ago. When these trends first come out I find myself thinking what are these people thinking. Then a few months down the road these pieces of clothing miraculously find their way into my closet.
