what is happening?!

Check This Video Out.

It blows my mind to read these things. I have no words for it.

  1. In the end, the video asks: what does this mean? I thought the responses to the video as posted on YouTube were pretty lame. I think that the video states that we're living in an information explosion that is being led by technology. When I was in graduate school, I remember our class read about a historian who received his Phd. after one year of study. All of us students in the class were quite miffed; we asked our professor why we couldn't obtain our degrees in that time frame. (It generally takes six to ten years to obtain a Phd). His retort: in the late 1880s you could in a year's time read all the history books that had been published. Today, you couldn't read all the history books that have been published in a lifetime. Hence, none of us would be receiving our degrees in a year. What I took from away from that discussion is that education no longer means holding on to vast amounts of information. Rather, education today means knowing where to find the information your need. That's where Google and the like come in. So, I think the video is about the need to learn how to gather and process information when needed (new model), not about the accumulation of knowledge (old school)

  2. This is really crazy! Despite the initial shock when reading the data, after I think about it, I'm really not that surprised... To start, I think it is interesting that China will be the most English speaking country in the world. But, I have also heard that caucasions will be the minority in the US in the future. I can believe this with all the immigration to the United States. I do not for a second doubt that the top demanded jobs in 2010 didn't exist in 2004. Technology is increasing so fast, and no advancements ever seem to be good enough. With all the new advancements, more jobs need to be created to deal with and understand these tasks. Technology, which is already a huge part of corporation America, will be an issue that companies are entirely dependent upon. The part that worries me, is our education statistics. I feel these stats should prove that America needs to readjust the curriculum and learning process to meet the needs of society today and connect more with students. There shouldn't be any child not in school, and "just getting by" should not be tolerated. The "no child left behind" campaign needs to be focused on and continually analyzed. Clips like this youtube one are interesting wake-up calls that we need to change things fast and adapt to our society.
