it's human

when i was a little girl, my mother used to plug up the kitchen sink, fill it with water, float random kitchen knick-knacks in it, and let me play. obviously this was a little game to keep me entertained for 20 minutes or so, but to me, i loved pushing the objects down and watching them float back up for air. each object had it's own survival strategy. though i used all my might to keep the object at the bottom of the sink, it would never stay put.

everyone has those moments in life when nothing they do seems to be right. in those moments, it seems that whatever we do or whatever we try, it's wrong. but the thing is... i think it may just all be in our head. if we let insecurities unknowingly consume us, how are we to prevent others from the assuming idiotic outbreaks of craziness? we are who we are; no one can teach us how to be ourselves, we just live according to our own feelings. it is how we are able to process things because when it comes down to the nitty-gritty of life, we really only have ourselves to rely on; to trust in. we all assume our roles in the world whether they be sister, daughter, son, girlfriend, husband, or friend. we play those roles the way we believe we should and there is no right or wrong way to do it. so when we think we are making those mistakes, we have to remind ourselves that we are just doing what is natural to us and just because what we do does not match the stereotypical approach, it is not the end of the world.

we are like those objects in the kitchen sink floating up for air; we are doing what is necessary to protect ourselves from drowning. it is innate and there is nothing we can do to change that unless we turn our backs on our own individuality. no matter how strong the force to drown may be, we have to fight back and stay true to our nature; we have to swim for air.

Found some encouragement.

So I was sitting at work and I read one of my friend's new blogs... he just started his own... and honestly, I was really encouraged by his words. I have known this person for 4 years now and he has always agreed with me on living life and following your dreams. I could always turn to him if I had a dream or a desire to be something more than who I was at the time. I like to think of myself as a person who wants to attempt the impossible or a person who knows she can do something. Lately I have been helping my family out in the business and I don't mind doing it at all, but I realized I still have my own dreams and I don't want to lose the passion I usually hold for what I love. So reading my friend's blog, he wrote something about when you say "I wish" during the day you should take action and basically make what you wish come true. This really touched me and I am thankful for his insight. It reminded me that I need to keep my eyes on the prize so to say and remember that I have my own dreams for my life and its all good and nice to help your family, but don't let it stifle your own dreams. One day soon I will make my dreams come true. Thank you to my dear friend.

What do you fear?

"our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. it is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. we ask ourselves, 'who am i to be brillant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' actually, who are you not to be? you are a child of God. your playing small does not serve the world. there is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. we are all meant to shine, as children do. we were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. it is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. as we are liberated from our own fear, our prescence automatically liberates others."

i find when people generally get depressed or sad or just have a plain ole bad day, the best thing to do is partake in an activity that brings happiness. the only downfall is that most people don't know what it is that makes them happy. so, my suggestion--create a wall of happiness. on this wall, post everything and anything that makes you happy. it can be a picture of you and your friends, a cut-out from a magazine, an album cover, a fortune you liked from a fortune cookie, a dried-up flower... anything! as you build it up, it will be a constant reminder of your favorite things and show you all the reasons you should be happy in life--no matter how horrible your day is. if you are going through an identity crisis of some sort, this wall can possibly point you in the direction of your most desired job, for example.

another great idea i stumbled upon that can bring you happiness is to create a "why don't you..." list. pick ten things you can do every once in a while to bring you back to reality and yourself and take your mind off of the craziness of life. such things could be cooking or baking something challenging, writing a letter instead of an email, taking a long walk, or playing some music. anything that will make you happy.

everyone needs a reminder of why we should be happy with our lives, so take time out of your busy schedule and remember why it is you are doing what you're doing. try to get 'back in-touch' with who you are instead of who people want you to be.

hope this helps :)

country chic

(jen aniston, kate bosworth, ashley olsen)

lately we have been seeing a swarm of celebrities and stores showcasing the notoriously known farmer shirts--flannel plaid button downs. what was once determined unfashionable and homely, plaid shirts are invading the magazines and the fashionistas' closets. i know when i was younger, i always enjoyed wearing my flannel shirts because they were the most comfortable piece of clothing i could wear outside my house. however, flannel plaid shirts were never used to define the curves of your body or demonstrate one's exceptional style. now whenever i walk into a trendy store or flip the pages of an US Weekly, i see many different versions of the article of clothing. i think it is very interesting to see how celebrities and media can manipulate girls' opinion on style. before this new trendy wave, girls would not be caught dead in a flannel shirt so it is remarkable how quickly we change our minds about what is 'okay' to wear around.

obviously, i am a fan of this new trend, but what does it really say about our individuality. i'm not going to stop following trend reports, but i just want to draw it to your attention. i think it is really important to stay true to one's unique style and mix+match trends with your own originality. gotta keep them guessin'!

the perfect accessory

since high school i have always loveddd oversized rings. actually, my friends used to question my taste because of this, but they told me that i was the kind of person who could pull off large rings. (whatever that means haha).  they would always try them on to see if they liked the style, but always returned the ring saying 'they just couldn't do it.' almost eight years later, the world decided oversized cocktail rings were the perfect accessory, which obviously i agree with! finally i do not have to search high and low for large rings... they are everywhere now! we see celebrities walking the red carpet or shopping in soho sporting the new jewelry style.

cocktail rings ARE the perfect accessory. whether you wear the simple black dress or a crazy floral printed outfit, a tasteful cocktail ring just works; no other jewelry necessary.

the inspiring talent of Kate Voegele

i first heard Kate Voegele's music on the CW's One Tree Hill last year and i immediately downloaded her entire cd. her amazing voice captivates the audience and her lyrics are so heartfelt that it is truly hard to stop listening. i know that me and my friends have had moments when we are driving in the car and have had Voegele's cd, "Don't Look Away," on repeat. it is just so easy to get lost in her words when you are having a difficult time. her music has a very soothing feeling and her words are very uplifting. her songs have the ability to help you work out your problems without you even knowing you are getting help. Voegele believes in confronting her problems and working them out instead of 'sweeping them under the rug,' which i find so refreshing. i think it is very important to work out your problems and if music is the way to do that, then go for it. i know that just listening to her words has helped me overcome some situations and give me clarity.

Voegele has been writing and singing her own songs since the age of 15 and has been said to be the female version of John Mayer. Currently she just completed her second album, "A Fine Mess," due to release in May 2009. I've listened to a small sneak peek at the new album and it sounds like it will be a great addition to my collection.

please check her out... she is incredibly talented! link to her website in the title :)

justin timberlake's take on fashion advertising

some of you may have heard that justin timberlake and his friend started a fashion line called William Rast (the name dedicated to both of their grandfathers). i was watching something on t.v. the other day and they were interviewing justin on the entire line and how he is portraying the brand. truthfully, i am a fan of JT because he somehow is on the cutting edge of basically everything. he is a very talented individual and when i was watching the interview and was listening to the way he decided to advertise his brand i thought, how the hell does this kid think of everything?!

anyway, the way he decided to advertise was to create a movie trailer. there is no actual movie but the trailers you watch make you wish there was a movie. justin plays william rast and a girl plays a love interest. they have a bonnie and clyde situation where they are being chased by the cops for some reason. both characters are wearing the william rast line.

this idea of advertising is incredibly creative and unique. he simply took the tools he has in his life and applied them to his line. i don't know if any other designers have used this technique, but i think it should be extremely successful and respected.

chic male fashion

one of the hottest new trends for women are men's clothes. celebrities and fashion icons have recently been sporting sleek suits and casual vests around town and on the red carpet. one of the cute new trends is wearing a simple blazer with the sleeves rolled up over a cute little dress. the trend is so hot that fashion magazines are advising young women to steal their boyfriend's clothes. now i don't know about you, but i don't think the boys will appreciate girls storming their closets and stealing their wardrobe. so boys, i advise you look at the hot new trends for yourselves and keep your girl away from your blazers. a sleek and attractive look for men includes jeans, a graphic tee of some sort (possibly a music tee), and a sports jacket/blazer. the outfit sends out a casual, yet hip vibe. it gives the 'fashionable and put together without trying' look. this specific style has been around for a little while, but has never been properly embraced by the masses. doctor greg house can been seen sporting this awesome trend around the hospital on house m.d.

trust me, it's a good look. :)

Trust Me...

Tomorrow night (Jan. 26th) is the world premiere of TNT's new drama Trust Me. The show covers the ins and outs of the advertising agency and the supposed tension between the co-workers. The two lead characters, Eric McCormack and Tom Cavanagh, are polar opposite best friends who work together and seem to balance each other out very well. However, McCormack gets a promotion and now has to keep his best friend under control.

As a student interested in the advertising industry, I am very excited to watch the unveiling of this new show. I have heard rumors of the advertising industry being cut-throat and untrustworthy, so I am interested in seeing how Trust Me decides to portray it. I hope to see the friends' relationship grow stronger through their difficult times. The show will be quite the insight to the advertising world; the previews already have me on the edge of my seat. I hope it's a success!

he's just not that into you...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TDtFrD-Ol4&feature=related

There has been a lot of excitement brewing about the upcoming movie "He's Just Not That Into You" and I have to admit, I am definitely excited for it! Not only is there an outstanding cast, but the whole idea just seems honest and very much needed.

Over the past few years, newer technology makes it THAT much harder for a relationship to begin. Everyone is unsure of the proper protocol to responding to a text, IM, phone call, etc. Decades ago, everything seemed much easier because there were basically no forms of communication other than the telephone or actual face-to-face interactions. Nowadays, everyone is forced to read BETWEEN THE LINES, forcing an inevitable game to take place. Since the 'messagee' is reading between the lines, it forces the 'messenger' to write in a coded language. I know for a fact that every teenager has lived through this. Not only have I been victim to the absurd "what does that mean?!" question, but so have all of my friends, and probably the rest of the world.

I am so happy that there is finally a straight-forward response to the crazy game we all live as a result of the advances in technology. I cannot wait to see this movie, which comes out on February 6th! It is sure to address and probably 'make fun' of everything young people go through these days...

Check out the preview :)
